My Top Tips to Help You Survive the Festive Season
Christmas is a magical time of year, but let’s be honest—it can also be overwhelming and sometimes hard to survive the festive season. Between endless to-do lists, hosting duties, and social events, it’s easy to lose sight of what the season is really about: joy, connection, and looking after yourself as well as others.
As someone who’s balancing a lot this Christmas—wrapping presents, managing work, and caring for my mum, who has Alzheimer’s and will be staying with us for a few days—I’ve had to get serious about prioritising self-care. Here are some tips I’ve found helpful to stay calm and make it through the busy festive period with my sanity intact.
1. Sleep: The Ultimate Self-Care Tool
Sleep often gets pushed aside when we’re busy, but it’s essential for managing stress and keeping your energy up. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night—easier said than done, I know, but it’s worth the effort.
Here are a few things that help me:
- Create a bedtime ritual: I love a cup of herbal tea and a few minutes of gentle yoga to wind down.
- Limit screen time: Avoid phones and laptops at least an hour before bed—those emails can wait until morning!
- Stick to a routine: Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends.
2. Simplify Your To-Do List
This time of year, it’s easy to feel like everything has to be perfect, but the truth is, it doesn’t and simplifying can help you to survive the festive season. Prioritise what matters most and let go of the rest.
- Delegate: Get the kids involved in decorating, or ask your partner to help wrap presents.
- Say no: You don’t have to accept every invitation or do everything yourself.
- Break it down: Tackle your to-do list in small, manageable chunks instead of trying to do it all at once.
3. Stay Active to Relieve Stress
Movement is one of the best ways to boost your mood and manage stress. It doesn’t have to be a big workout—just a little something to get your body moving.
- Walks: Even a short walk in the fresh air can do wonders for your mental health.
- Gentle yoga: A few stretches or poses can help you release tension and refocus.
- Dance it out: Put on your favourite festive playlist and have a little dance around the kitchen—it’s good for your body and your soul!
4. Eat Well to Stay Energised
It’s tempting to live on mince pies and chocolate this time of year, but balanced meals will keep your energy levels stable and your mood steady.
- Include protein, fibre, and healthy fats: These will keep you fuller for longer and help avoid energy crashes.
- Meal prep: I’ve been making big batches of soup and stews that are easy to heat up when I’m too busy to cook.
- Stay hydrated: Don’t forget to drink plenty of water—it’s easy to overlook when you’re rushing around.
5. Create Calm Moments
With so much going on, it’s important to carve out little pockets of calm in your day to help you to survive the festive season. See my blog about stress for further tips.
- Mindfulness: Even just five minutes of deep breathing can help you feel more grounded.
- Me time: Whether it’s a warm bath, a quiet cup of tea, or reading a book, make sure you’re taking some time just for yourself.
- Switch off: Consider reducing your screen time or stepping away from social media if it’s adding to your stress.
6. Keep Perspective
At the end of the day, it’s not about perfect presents or Instagram-worthy decorations. What really matters is spending time with the people you love and creating memories together.
For me, that means being present with my mum and my family, even if the turkey isn’t perfect or the house is a bit messy. Letting go of perfection frees up so much mental space—and it makes the season so much more enjoyable.
This Christmas, I encourage you to put yourself on your priority list. By taking care of yourself, you’ll not only feel better but also be able to bring more joy and calm to those around you. After all, isn’t that what the holidays are really about?
